New Trail System Connects Three County Parks in 12-Mile Loop

After three years of construction, the Chesterfield Greenway Trail officially opened Saturday, linking Pocahontas State Park, Iron Bridge Park, and Falling Creek Ironworks in a continuous 12-mile loop.

Hundreds of residents turned out for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, with many immediately setting off on foot and bicycle to explore the paved multi-use path that winds through forests, wetlands, and historic sites.

"This trail has been a community dream for over a decade," said Parks Director Angela Freeman. "It gives families a safe, car-free way to experience the natural beauty of Chesterfield."

The $8.7 million project was funded through a combination of state recreation grants and county bonds. The trail features rest stations every two miles, wayfinding signage, and emergency call boxes. A second phase connecting to the Appomattox River Trail is already in the planning stages.
