Fire Department Secures Grant for New Swift Water Rescue Unit
Chesterfield County Fire and EMS has been awarded a $2.3 million FEMA grant to establish a dedicated swift water rescue unit, officials confirmed Thursday.
The funding will cover two specialized rescue boats, training for 40 firefighters, and equipment including dry suits, throw bags, and vehicle-mounted winch systems. The unit will be stationed at Fire Station 12, near the James River floodplain.
"After last summer s flash flooding, the need became undeniable," said Fire Chief William Torres. "We responded to 47 water rescue calls in a single week. This unit will save lives."
The first class of rescue swimmers will begin a six-week training program in May, with the unit expected to be fully operational before hurricane season begins in June.
